The first chapter sets the tone of sad comedy, of a group of people easily fooled and uneducated who will have little luck in life. It’s like a Bela Tarr film with some laughs thrown in. Are things in Moldova this bad? He’s obviously playing up the comedy but would a wife really hang herself from shame? This is like 19th century peasant life.

Touch of Gogol humor.
