Though Tolstoy doesn’t make a direct comparison there is a parallel between the social intriguing of the women and the military jockeying of the men. In one scene where we watch the various soldiers go past and hear their comments, even with so little written for each they all feel like unique people. His ability to create a complete character with just a line of dialogue is scary.
