The first battle! This is that famous scene where Rostov wonders how the French could possibly be coming to kill him, he whom everyone loves and is fond of. And then also the scenes of the battlefield dividing lines and how it’s nothing to cross them and what a beautiful day it is, too amid all the terror.

And then my favorite minor character, little Captain Tushin. I love meeting him every time I read this.
