It’s funny how a book in which all the characters are drawn so vividly, are so realistic, in where it feels as if actual living, breathing people exist on the pages of this book, that the exterior antagonist, Napoleon, is a cliched buffoon. Not this it’s bad art, however, since what Tolstoy is trying to do is degrade the privilege of war and warriors. Tolstoy shows these men as fools because war is foolish and awful.
