Thematically this chapter is about the passing of the torch from the elder, silly, Frenchified generation of Nicholas’s father, to his own, more Russian generation. The wolf slips past his father, who though he owns all this land and has maintained it all these years, is no hunter. His son must catch the wolf, set the family affairs in order: grow up.
