Whereas Jacinta thought Pituso looked like he was her husband’s child (resemblance), we get Juanin looking for someone who has transformed and whom he might not recognize. Transformation everywhere and in everyone. Fortunata is an “unlikely vision”.

We’re getting this story parallel (because of interruptions) with General Pavia’s coup. One overthrow juxtaposed with another (government and marriage). Jacinto is taking about the coup but he only wants to know about Fortunata’s hat.

I mean, the name Fortunata IS in the title so this is no surprise we’re going to get her in the story. Is Juanito stepping out because he’s bored of Jacinta, because she’s been odd about the ‘Pituso novel’? Neither of them are perfect, but I do empathize with Jacinta.

And so they give Pituso to the orphanage. They take him from his home, play with him, then give him to strangers. What’s worse, the boy’s wild behavior or theirs? I understand that Jacinta wants children but she went to far.
