Arthur makes Gryfflet promise to go joust with a knight at the fountain and then return back to him. Gryfflet does, he hits the shield (touching a knights shield left in the open invites a joust in this world) but he loses badly but the knight shows him mercy and Gryfflet lives. Mercy in action.
Arthur’s parentage is finally all out in the open. The squire Gryfflet arrives at court and Merlin suggests Arthur knight him because he’ll one day be useful and a good knight, too. Arthur tells him to give him a gift.
The questing beast was born of an incestuous union between a brother and sister (whom the devil arranged) and this juxtaposes with Arthur’s incest. A cursed knight is forced to chase this beast, analog with Sisyphus. All this points to cracks in the foundation of Arthur’s realm.
Ulphuns insults Arthur’s mother, Queen Igrayne (+ Merlin) for not revealing Arthur’s parentage thus leading to the incest.
Questynge beste is being hunted by King Pellynor. Pellynor takes Arthur’s horse. Merlin shows up in disguise of a 14 year old who says he knows who Arthur’s father is (Uther). Merlin departs but comes back, this time disguised as an old man who tells him that the 14 year old was right and that he also is guilty of incest (and God is displeased with him).
034: He sleeps with Wife of Orkney and fathers Mordred. This is actually an act of incest (by marriage, thou not of blood) and lays the seed for Arthur’s ultimate destruction. Arthur, in not knowing his kinship, is part of this destruction.
Hunting! A harte is a stag. Arthur sees the questing beast.
Lawless men arrive in the lands of Arthur’s enemies who he had just been fighting, no doubt to take advantage of the wreckage of all the fighting and lack of administration. Arthur goes to Carlyon and meets King Lottis’ wife of Orkeney (mother of Gawayne, Gaheris, Aggravayne, and Gareth).
Our first mention of Gwenyvere. She’s the daughter of the king of Camylarde. Arthur is now ready to pay back Ban and Bors to fight King Claudas, but they let him off the hook, and Merlin says that they will need Arthur in a few years to help them.
Merlin disguises himself and asks Arthur for a gift. Arthur refuses. Though Arthur doesn’t recognize Merlin, Ulphuns and Brascias do, and so Arthur is ashamed for not being generous (or at least for being caught). Damesell Lyonors arrives, she and Arthur get busy and they have a child, Borre who “was aftir a good knyght and of the Round Table”).
Merlin tells Arthur to reward Ban and Bors, too. Rewarding others will cause others to want to fight for you (loyalty). Merlin goes to see the chronicler (master?) Bloyse.
