Royns begs for mercy and thus Arthur’s foe in Ireland is brought to the knee with the work of Balyn but Balyn doesn’t know the name of the knights who defeated him and only calls him the Knight of the Two Swords. Merlin then reveals it was the brothers. Arthur is still pities he had been wroth with Balyn.

058:

Merlin advises Balyn to attack King Royns and disguises the brothers. They come to the castle in disguise and attack Royns.

057:

Merlin predicts 12 years of poverty, misery, and wretchedness because of the death of the lady Columbe. Balyn should have stopped her. The dolerous stroke is mentioned and this is a foreshadowing of the grail story.

Dwarfs are not a caricature for the peasantry, they are a trope in this literature and really are little people. First mention of King Marke of Cornuwayle. Lanceour and lady (who threw herself on the sword) Columbe are buried.

Balyn meets his brother, Balan. What we’re seeing here is more of the brother feud complex in Malory’s society. They decide to team up.

Balyn kills Lanceour who doesn’t know Arthur has changed his opinion / judgment of Balyn. A damesell sees Lanceour is dead and so she throws herself on a sword and dies.

Merlin explains how Balyn is actually an important ally. The first lady, Lady Lyle with the sword and scabbard, killed her own brother and is a false damesell. Live by the sword, die by the sword. By the way, Merlin’s name is Myrddin which sounds like the word “shit” which is why it’s changed.

052:

Balyn heads off to kill Royns (Irish King). Arthur not happy and also buries her richly (minus the head). Arthur allows the knight Launceor to ride after Balyn and revenge him. Arthur agrees.

051:

Lady of the Lake wants to cash in on the favor she originally said she would ask Arthur for. She wants Balyn’s head. Arthur refuses since it’s not an honorable request. Behind the scenes is a war between women because Lady of the Lake had killed Balyn’s mother. So he chops off her head instead. Not exactly good party form here.

050:

Lady Lyle tells Balyn that sword will be his destruction (cursed sword). Arthur apologizes to Balyn for treating him poorly and invites him into fellowship with Arthur. Balyn is grateful, but wants to take his leave of Arthur. Arthur is not happy about it, but lets him go anyway hoping they can make up later. Lady of the Lake shows up.
